The capital of Arkansas, Little Rock, is the state’s largest city. The city gets its name from a group of rocks along the Arkansas River, which was named "la petite roche" by French explorer Jean-Baptiste Bernard de la Harpe in the 1720s. However, during a border dispute in 1821, Little Rock was briefly known as Arkopolis. This can be seen on maps of the area dated from that time. Little Rock provides Arkansas with an industrial hub.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and its healthcare associates are the largest employers in the region, hiring more than 10,000 employees a year. When Little Rock Zoo first opened in 1926, it had only two animals, a circus-trained wolf, and an abandoned timber wolf. Now, Little Rock zoo has more than a hundred different exhibits that promise to delight and intrigue the whole family. A city true to its culture, Little Rock has several excellent fried chicken restaurants. The most famous is the eponymous Gus's World Famous Fried Chicken, which can be found at 300 President Clinton Ave.
Little Rock lies in the humid subtropical zone, with hot, humid summers and mild winters, with usually little snow.
