Founded in 1871 Fargo, is the most populated city in the state of North Dakota. It currently is home to over 15% of the population of the entire state of North Dakota. Fargo is home to over 118,000 residents, it is actually considered the fourth fastest growing small city in the United States. In a major freak accident, a fire struck Fargo on June 7, 1893, this accident destroyed 31 blocks of downtown Fargo. The city was immediately rebuilt with new and improved buildings made out of brick, new streets and even a new water system. Over 246 buildings were built within a one year. During the 1880s Fargo was actually known as the “divorce capital” of the Midwest because of how lenient its divorce laws were. Since the late 1990s, it has been reported that Fargo has the lowest unemployment rate among MSAs in the United States.
