Sitting directly between New York, Frankfurt, and Tokyo, Anchorage is a 9 ½-hour flight from nearly 90 percent of the industrialized world. First discovered by English explorer James Cook in 1778, Anchorage has grown to be the most populous city in Alaska. It has an estimated 300,000 residents living within its metropolitan district. Although it is America’s fifth largest city, covering more than 5,000 square miles, Anchorage boasts more espresso stands per capita than anywhere else in the United States. With great access to the wilderness, the most beautiful scenic views are claimed by the Alaska Railroad, which connects the city to nearby glacier tours and ski paths.
During the summer, the charming Coastal Classic Railroad takes visitors on day trips to the picturesque city of Seaward, which acts as a gateway to the Kenai Fjords National Park. During the winter, a unique way to travel is by dogs and skis. Skijoring, racing on skis with your dog's rope attached to your hip, is an interesting way to get around the town.
While technically classified as subarctic, the climate remains quite moderate because of maritime influences. The Chugach Mountains keep out the coldest weather. However, the average July temperature peaks at 15 degrees C (59 degrees F).
Arts and Culture
Anchorage has seven museums. The most popular is the Anchorage Museum at Rasmuson Center. Exhibiting Alaskan heritage, it's a must-do for anyone living in the four-time All American City Winner.
