Whether you are looking for packing tips or advice on comparing the best moving companies, there is a ton of information to be found on the internet. What is unfortunate is that no one ever tells you what to do once the movers leave. Where do you even begin unpacking? Unless you have moved several times in the past, there is a good chance that you will get halfway through, and figure out that you made things much harder on yourself than they needed to be. Here’s the guide to your perfect unpacking plan.
Find Your Box of Essentials
Hopefully, when you packed, you put together a box of essentials. This should include everything you need to get you motivated and keep you energized. A few things you should include in your box are your iPod, docking station, coffee maker or tea kettle, coffee or tea, travel mug with lid and lots of snacks. Protein bars, peanuts, and other nutritious snacks are recommended. If you eat sugar all day, you will experience highs and lows nonstop, which will affect your mood.
Ideally, you were able to go to your new place and clean before you moved everything in. However, this is not always possible. In this case, you will need to clean before you get started. Wipe down all the shelves in the cupboards before unpacking anything and wash your walls. If you know you are going to need to clean, hopefully, you included appropriate supplies in your box of essentials.
Start with the Bathroom
When you hit a wall after several hours and are absolutely exhausted, the only thing on your mind will be the thought of taking a shower. Now, if you have to spend extra time trying to find your shower curtain, shampoo, soap, etc., you are just going to get irritated. You don’t have to unpack your entire bathroom but have the important stuff done that will allow you to shower and get ready for bed.
Set Up Your Bed
If your movers did not already put your bed together, you will need to do this. Then, you should find your linens and make the bed. Just like the shower, when you become exhausted, you won’t want to deal with searching for your sheets, just so you can go to sleep.
Clear Out the Big Boxes
You probably have a lot of big boxes that are either filled with clothes or kitchen items. Leave the clothes and work in the kitchen. When you can break down and clear away some of these large boxes that held your Tupperware, pots, and pans, etc., you will free up a lot of floor space. This makes you feel like you are really making a dent, even if you’re not!
Reorganize While You Unpack
Have a couple of empty boxes handy. You may find that there are some things you want storing in the basement, or you are not sure what to do with. Maybe you didn’t get rid of everything before the move, so now you have items to donate or throw away. Put these items in appropriate boxes, rather than having them create more clutter in the room. Mark a box for storage, trash and donate, and then everything has a place to go.
Moving does not stop with researching the best moving companies and getting everything packed up. There is still a lot to do once you are in your new place. This guide should help!
