You did exactly what you said you weren’t going to do, didn’t you? You have been telling yourself you had plenty of time to pack, but now your small apartment movers will be there in a couple of days and you are totally not prepared. Well, there is not point stressing over it or feeling sorry for yourself because now you can’t go out tonight or spend the day at the beach tomorrow. You waited until the last minute, and now you have to scramble. Fortunately, last minute packing does not have to be quite as stressful as you think. Follow our last minute packing and moving tips.
Get Your Supplies
So, you have a few empty boxes in your spare room so you are going to pack those up first, huh? Big mistake! If you are in a time crunch, the best thing you can do is have all of your supplies before you start. If you have to leave the house to get something, it is really hard to get back in work mode when you get back home.
Don’t worry about having too many boxes; you don’t have to use them all. If you buy boxes, tape, etc., and you don’t use them, most unused supplies can be returned.
Don’t Pack Everything
There is no point packing things you don’t need. Designate a box to donate and a box for garbage. If you would have started earlier, you could have had a “sell” box too, but now there is no time. If you don’t need it, put it in one of these two boxes.
Divide Up Your Clothes
Many people wait to pack up their clothes last, but quite honestly, it is pretty much the worst job, so you may as well get it out of the way. You will be glad you did! Create one pile of clothes that you need for the next few days to get you through your move and then a pile that you plan on wearing in the next couple weeks. When you pack the pile, clearly label the box or use a suitcase, so you don’t have to dig. The rest of the clothes that you don’t need can just be put in boxes, and don’t forget to make use of your donate box for anything you never wear anymore, or can’t fit into.
Box of Needs
Keep a couple boxes set aside designated specifically for things that you will need right away. This could include towels, coffee maker, cellphone charger, etc. You can continue to add to these boxes right up until you are ready to leave, since you probably still are using some of the items.
Munchies and Music
If there ever was a time that demanded good music and some snacks, this is it. While you may be tempted to snack on chips, chocolate or other junk food, it will just end up weighing you down and making you feel tired. Grab some granola, fruit, air-popped popcorn and a box of sugar-free fruit pops to indulge in during breaks.
You may want to set your timer on the stove or on your phone for one hour at a time and power pack. Then, set it again for a 15 minute break. Packing at the last minute is no fun, but if you stay focused, you will have it all done long before your movers arrive. Many moving companies offer moving services that include packing and unpacking so, if you find yourself unable to finish packing in time, your moving company might be able to help for a small fee.
