How to Pack a Moving Truck

One of the biggest parts of moving is packing the moving truck, whether you are hiring a moving company or doing a DIY move. It requires a lot of time, energy, and knowledge to get all your items safely on the truck. You need to make careful calculations to maximize the space and minimize the damage. If you have never done it before, the whole experience can be quite overwhelming. Here are some suggestions on how to pack a moving truck.

Get the necessary packing supplies
Before starting to pack, get all the packing supplies you will need, such as boxes, tapes, straps, plastic wrap, paper paddings and furniture pads. Doing this will save you a lot of time and trouble when packing.

Disassemble the furniture
Tables, chairs, beds and other furniture are easier to pack and load if you disassemble them. Take apart the beds, bed frames and table legs. Remove the cushions from the sofa. Take out the drawers from the filing cabinets.

Pack tightly to save space
Pack your clothes in suitcases and boxes. Pack electrical appliances, kitchen utensil and decorative pieces in the packing materials they came in or inappropriately sized cardboard boxes. Use foam, bubble wraps and padding to prevent damages. If you have a lot of books, pack them in appropriately sized cardboard boxes to save space.

Load the heavier items
Heavy items can cause irreparable damage to lighter and delicate items; therefore, load the heaviest things into the truck first, items like washing machines, dishwashers and fridges. Make sure to stand them upright. Then load your heavy furniture, such as sofas and large tables. Wrap each item in plastic or paper and secure them with straps.

Load the longer items
Once all the heavy items have gone in, it’s time to load the longer items. These include table-tops, long mirrors, headboards, and mattresses. Place them in an upright position against the long walls to save space and also to provide a cushion for other items.

Load the boxes and fragile items
Load the boxes containing your books, appliances, utensils, clothes and other items on top of the heavy items. Here again, make sure that the boxes containing the heavier items go first and the ones containing fragile items on top of them. Pack the boxes tightly to leave as few empty spaces and holes between them as possible.

Load the remaining items
After all the boxes have gone in, load the remaining items. Start with empty spaces and holes between the boxes and heavy items. Fill them with appropriately sized items so that heavier items and boxes will not collide with each other when the truck is moving. Put the remaining items on top of the boxes.
