Moving to a New City to Start a Career

Moving to a new city to start a career can be as terrifying as it is exciting. One part of you is probably ready to jump in feet first and start proving yourself to move up the corporate ladder while the other half is likely a little fearful of the unknown. Moving away from family and friends can be a little terrifying and you want to make sure you are making the right decision before you even start calling around to the best moving companies and comparing quotes.

Decide On a Destination
If you already have a job waiting for you and you are familiar with the area, then you really have it made; the hard part is over. Now, if you have a job offer but you know nothing about the city, you want to treat the move just as you would if you were still seeking employment. After all, if your career with that particular company is not all that you hoped for, you want to make sure that there are other opportunities available.

Take the time to explore the company in the area where you could potentially work. You also want to look at the city; is it a place you could see yourself being happy? If you are an outdoor fanatic and there are no large parks or decent trails you could find yourself really “home” sick and wanting to go back to where you were when you were happy.

Choosing a Neighborhood
Whether you are renting an apartment or buying a home, it can be very overwhelming to do when you are not familiar with the neighborhood. You don’t want to sign a lease and move in only to discover it is a high-theft area or the house behind you constantly has loud parties. You can always call the police station there and ask about the neighborhood or apartment complex you are considering.

If at all possible, make a trip there first, or you can always put your stuff in storage and stay in a weekly rate hotel or a furnished apartment, so you have time to find the perfect home.

Arrive Early
Relocating is stressful enough; the last thing you want to do is add to that stress by arriving at the last minute. If you have a job lined up, give yourself time to arrive, unpack and learn your way around. There is nothing worse than getting ready for your first day of work surrounded by boxes and ending up late because you had a hard time finding your way.

Making Friends
The sooner you get out there and get active, the faster you will make friends. Do the things you love to do, so you will meet others with the same interest. This could be running the trails early in the morning, going to the gym, taking a yoga class or even going to the library. Don’t be afraid to attend events in your area or take a cooking or pottery class. Do something you have always wanted to do. Traditionally, the movers from any of the best moving companies will be polite and professional enough that you will feel comfortable asking them where the best neighborhood pub is or which beach locals mingles at. Of course, you are bound to make friends volunteering somewhere too!
