How to Officially Update Your Address

In a perfect world, the professional movers from the best moving companies would handle all the nitty-gritty details, including changing your address, but unfortunately, there are tasks you will need to take care of yourself. Changing your address correctly is one of the most important things you will do. Many people change their address with the post office and neglect the rest, while others change their driver’s license and assume everything else will fall into place. There are actually a few places you need to change your address for it to be done properly.

USPS

If you want your male forwarded, you are going to have to tell the post office where to send it. You can physically stop in the post office and grab a change of address from to fill out, or you can handle it right online. If you change it online, it will cost you $1. This basically verifies that it is indeed you making the change, and you will receive an immediately confirmation. You can even schedule what day you want the change to take place. Keep in mind that not everything gets forwarded. Many magazines and other subscriptions will need to be changed with the provider.

State Offices

Most people cringe at the thought of going into a Secretary of State, but your license could be suspended if you don’t change your address officially with the state. Now, you can actually go the site, download a change of address form and mail it in, but it is often easier just to go in person. If you have a vehicle you will need to change your registration anyway. Plus, if you vote, you will need to change your address for your voter’s registration card too. Not to mention, if you have been thinking about becoming an organ donor, now is a good time to go ahead and get one of those cool little stickers added to your license.

Social Security

Most people forget about changing their address with the U.S. Social Security Administration. Well, they pretty much can find you wherever you go, but if you are receiving benefits, or will be in the future, you should take the initiative to do this. You don’t have to physically go the social security building either.

If you don’t have a password, you will want to apply for one. You can do this right online. You need to answer a few questions to verify your identity and then a password will come to you in the mail. When it does, you can visit the Change of Address section on the Social Security Administration website. At this point, you can use your password to submit your change of address.

If you didn’t apply for a password, you can still change your address online, but then you will answer a series of verification questions here as well. The SSA will mail you a letter confirming that they have your correct address on file.
