Once you’re settled in your new home, get out and explore! Anchorage is full of outdoor activities year-round. Enjoy a few of our top picks:

– Goodbye sightseeing, hello flightseeing! Get a birds-eye view of Alaska, count bears from above, and fly around Mount McKinley from a private plane.

– In the summer, be sure to enjoy your 20 hours of sunlight by spending it outside. We love kayaking along the relaxed Matanuska River and through glacier-fed Eklutna Lake.

– For winter, button up and leave the food at home for bear viewing! Even though Alaska is the only U.S. state with three bear species – black, brown and polar – Anchorage is only home to black and brown bears. Or, if you prefer a more tame environment, head to the Alaska Zoo where you can also see moose, wolves, caribou, arctic foxes and more.

– Get your popcorn ready for the Northern Lights! The show begins as early as 8pm during winter months, but of course, no one can guarantee when the aurora borealis will be out. Check out Eagle River Nature Center, about 22 miles from downtown, for viewing and try to catch one of their astronomer-led events.
